Light Switch Not Working? Common Causes

A light switch that stops working is usually caused by a blown globe, a tripped circuit, or a worn-out switch. The globe and the switchboard are safe things to check first. If the switch is hot, crackles, sparks or smells, stop using it, turn the power off and call a licensed electrician.
Light switch and dimmer work is a regular part of our job book: over 100 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026.
Safety first
A switch is wired to mains power. Never take the cover off a switch to look inside, even if the light is off. If the switch is warm, discoloured, crackling or smells of burning, stop using it, switch the circuit off at the switchboard and call an electrician.
If you see smoke or flames, leave the house and call 000.
Start with the easy checks
- Try a new globe. This is the most common cause. Check the globe type and wattage on the fitting.
- Check whether other lights on the same circuit work. If none do, look at the switchboard (our guide on why your power keeps tripping helps if it trips again).
- Look at the switchboard for a tripped circuit breaker or safety switch. Switch it back on once.
- Check other switches in the room. Some lights have two switches that control the same light.
- If it is a dimmer, check it is compatible with your globes. LED globes need a suitable dimmer.
Common causes when the globe is fine
- A worn-out switch. Switches have moving parts and wear after years of use.
- A loose connection behind the switch or at the light.
- A failed dimmer or a dimmer that does not suit the globe.
- Damaged or aged wiring.
- A faulty light fitting or transformer, often with downlights.
- A tripping safety switch caused by a fault elsewhere on the circuit.
These all need an electrician. They are not parts you should fix yourself. Our electrical fault finding service covers the wiring side.
Signs it is more than a worn switch
- The switch feels hot or looks scorched.
- You can hear buzzing, crackling or sizzling.
- The light flickers when you touch the switch.
- The circuit trips when you turn the switch on.
- The switch gives you a tingle or shock. Do not touch it again and call us straight away.
- The switch works only when pushed hard or held in a certain position.
Any of these could be a wiring fault. Our guide to what counts as an electrical emergency can help you decide how urgent it is.
What we do
- Isolate the circuit and make it safe.
- Test the wiring and the switch.
- Replace the switch or dimmer, or repair the wiring fault.
- Make sure it suits your lights. Fit a suitable dimmer if you use LEDs.
- Test the circuit and restore power.
A switch replacement is usually quick. If we find a deeper wiring problem, we will explain it and agree the next step with you.
Upgrading while we are there
If you are replacing a tired switch, it is a good time to think about a dimmer, a modern switch plate, or a switch in a more convenient place. Our light switch and dimmer installation page covers the options.

Common questions
Why has my light switch stopped working?
The globe, the circuit breaker or a worn switch are the common causes. Check the globe and switchboard first, then call an electrician.
Is it safe to replace a light switch myself?
No. In Australia, fixed wiring work must be done by a licensed electrician.
Why does my light switch feel warm?
A warm switch can mean a loose connection or overload. Stop using it and call an electrician.
Why does my light flicker when I flip the switch?
It can be a loose connection, a poor switch or an incompatible dimmer or globe. It should be checked.

Usually a fault in the light, switch or wiring on that circuit. Leave it off and call us.
