Ovens and cooktops draw more power than most appliances, so they usually need their own circuit and a proper connection. A licensed electrician connects the appliance, checks the cable and circuit can carry the load, and tests it. If you are swapping gas for electric, we can look after the electrical side of the change.

Kitchen appliances are a regular job: over 100 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved an oven or cooktop.

Ovens and cooktops: the electrical side

Electric ovens, electric cooktops and induction cooktops all need to be wired by a licensed electrician. Many are connected on their own circuit to the switchboard, either through a plug and socket or by hardwiring.

  • Wall ovens: usually built into a cabinet and connected through a switch or a power point.
  • Freestanding cookers: a combined oven and cooktop in one unit, often on its own circuit.
  • Electric cooktops: ceramic or induction surfaces fitted into the bench.
  • Induction cooktops: heat the pot rather than the surface, and often need a stronger supply than the old cooktop they replace.

Is my wiring good enough for a new oven or cooktop?

A new appliance is often more powerful than the one it replaces. Before we connect it, we check the cable, the circuit breaker and the switchboard to see whether they can carry the load. An old circuit, a small cable or a switchboard with no spare space can all be a reason to do some extra work first, such as a switchboard upgrade.

This is also why we like to see the appliance details before the day. The model's power rating tells us what circuit it needs. Some smaller wall ovens can plug into a power point, but most cooktops and many ovens are hardwired to a circuit sized for them.

Changing from gas to electric: the electrical side

Many homeowners are moving from gas to electric cooking, often to an induction cooktop. We handle the electrical side of that change. A gas fitter handles the gas side, including capping the old supply.

  1. We check your switchboard and decide whether a new circuit is needed.
  2. A new cable is run to the cooktop or oven location, often through the ceiling or under the floor.
  3. The appliance is connected and tested.
  4. The gas fitter caps off the old gas supply.

If your board is old or full, we may suggest a switchboard upgrade first. We will explain why and show you the board. A cooktop or oven may also need a power point in the right spot rather than a hardwired connection.

What we do on the day

  1. Confirm the appliance, the cutout and the location.
  2. Switch off power and disconnect the old appliance, if there is one.
  3. Connect the new appliance through an isolating switch, which we fit as standard so it can be switched off safely for cleaning or repairs, then secure the cable and check clearances.
  4. Test every element, setting and the oven light.
  5. Show you the controls and clean up after the job.

Cabinet cut-outs and benchtop work are for a joiner or the supplier. We connect the power. Check the cutout size against the instructions before the day.

How long does it take?

A like-for-like swap on an existing circuit is usually a short job. A new cooktop with a new cable run takes longer, and a full gas-to-electric change depends on the cable route and the state of your switchboard. We will tell you what to expect when we see the job.

Safety and what to ask your electrician

A badly connected cooking appliance is a real safety risk. Wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469.

  • Can I see your licence number?
  • Is my existing circuit big enough for this appliance?
  • Is the circuit protected by a safety switch?
  • What happens to the old appliance?
  • What workmanship guarantee comes with the work?

Common questions

Do I need an electrician to install an oven?

Yes. Hardwired connections and dedicated circuits must be done by a licensed electrician in South Australia.

Can I swap gas for an electric cooktop?

Often yes. We handle the electrical side, and a gas fitter caps off the gas supply.

Do induction cooktops need special wiring?

Many do, because they can need more power than a traditional cooktop. We check your circuit and board first.

Can you install an oven I have bought already?

Yes. Please have the model details ready so we can check the power needs.

Will you remove my old oven?

Please ask us when you book. We will tell you what is included.

Why does my oven keep tripping the power?

It could be a faulty element, damp or damage in the wiring, or a circuit that cannot carry the load. Switch the oven off and call us, rather than resetting the board again and again.
