Hoile Electrical installs split system, multi-room and ducted air conditioners from start to finish, with a unit we supply or one you have bought: the indoor and outdoor units, the pipework and refrigerant gas, and the electrical work (the dedicated circuit, the outdoor isolator, safety switch protection, a check of your switchboard and supply, and testing). Our ARCtick refrigerant trading authorisation is AU62259 and our SA electrical licence is PGE 229 469. We do not service or repair air conditioners; for that, go to your supplier or an air conditioning specialist.
Over 50 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved installing an air conditioner.
What a split system is and what we install
A split system air conditioner has an indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor unit joined by pipework and cable. It heats in winter and cools in summer, and one unit usually looks after one room or one open living area. This is called reverse cycle. In winter the unit runs the other way and moves heat from the outside air into the room, which is how one unit does both jobs.
We do the whole installation: the indoor and outdoor units, the pipework and refrigerant gas between them, and the electrical work. We can supply the unit, or install one you have already bought. We also install multi-room and ducted systems. We can fit a unit where there was none, or a new unit in place of an old one.

Choosing the right size
The right unit is the one that suits the room, not the biggest one on the shelf. A unit that is too small works flat out and never keeps up. One that is too big can switch on and off constantly, which wastes power and leaves the room uncomfortable.
When we look at the job we consider:
- The size of the room and whether it is open to other rooms.
- How much sun the room gets, especially west-facing glass, and whether the ceiling is insulated.
- Whether you mostly want cooling or heating and cooling.
- How the room is used, such as a bedroom at night or a living area all day.
We confirm the size on site, once we have seen the room, rather than guessing from the floor area.
When you compare units, look at the energy rating label. The newer zoned label shows star ratings for cooling and heating in different climate zones, so read the zone that matches where you live.
Where the indoor and outdoor units should go
Position affects how well the air conditioner works, how it sounds and how it looks.
- Indoor unit: high on a wall with clear space around it, away from furniture that would block the air, and not directly above a bed or the couch.
- Outdoor unit: somewhere with good airflow, on a solid base or brackets, ideally out of direct view and away from bedroom windows and neighbours.
- The run between them: shorter is better, and a tidy, covered run looks better and lasts longer.
What we do on an installation
- We look at the room, the outdoor spot and the switchboard, and agree what we are doing and the quote.
- We check the switchboard and the supply, and what the new load will do to them.
- We mount the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework and cable between them.
- We handle the refrigerant gas under our ARCtick authorisation (AU62259).
- We install the dedicated circuit with its own safety switch protection, and a weatherproof isolator beside the outdoor unit.
- We connect the power, test the unit, the supply and the protection.
- We issue the certificate for the electrical work and show you how to use the unit, and where the isolator and circuit are.
Power is off for a short time while the connection is made. We tell you how long your job will take when we quote.
A dedicated circuit at your switchboard
An air conditioner is one of the biggest loads in most homes, so it should have its own circuit with the right protection. That way a fault in the unit trips only the air conditioner, and the rest of the house stays on.
Older homes may not have a spare space in the switchboard, or may still have ceramic fuses and no safety switches. We check the board before we price the job, so you are not surprised on the day. If it needs work, we explain why and what it involves. See our switchboard upgrades page for more.
Replacing an old air conditioner
If a new unit is replacing an old one, tell us. We check the existing circuit and isolator rather than assume they are fit to reuse, and we tell you if they need replacing for the new unit. We can also remove an old evaporative cooler or wall unit when the new split system goes in.
If an air conditioner trips the safety switch, smells of burning or has scorch marks around its switch, turn it off at the switchboard and leave it off. That points to an electrical fault, and our electrical fault finding page explains how we trace one.
Installation only: servicing and repairs
We do not service or repair air conditioners. That includes cleaning, gas top-ups and fixing a unit that has stopped cooling. For those jobs, contact your air conditioner supplier or an air conditioning specialist.
If you are not sure whether your problem is the unit or the power supply to it, call us. We can check the circuit and tell you if the fault is on the electrical side.
What to ask before you book
- Will you recommend a size for each room, and explain why?
- Is the power circuit, isolator and switchboard check part of the job?
- Is the whole job, including the pipework, refrigerant gas and electrical work, done by one licensed business?
- What is covered by a workmanship guarantee, and what is covered by the manufacturer?
- Can I see your licence numbers? (Ours are SA electrical licence PGE 229 469 and ARCtick authorisation AU62259.)

Common questions
What size split system do I need?
It depends on the room size, ceiling height, sun and insulation. We recommend a size when we have seen the room, rather than guessing from the floor area alone.
How long does an installation take?
It depends on the unit, the length of the pipe and cable run, and whether the switchboard needs work. We will tell you at the quote.
Do I need a new circuit for an air conditioner?
Usually yes. A split system should have its own protected circuit. We check your switchboard to see what is needed.
Can you replace my old air conditioner?
Yes. We can remove an old evaporative cooler or wall unit when the new split system goes in. Tell us what you have and where it is, and we check the existing circuit and isolator before we reuse them.
Do you service or repair air conditioners?
No. We do not service or repair air conditioners. For that, contact your air conditioner supplier or an air conditioning specialist. If you think the fault is in the power supply, call us and we will check the circuit.
Do you supply the unit, and do you install ducted or multi-room systems?
Yes to both. We can supply the unit or install one you have already bought, and we install split, multi-room and ducted systems in full: the units, the pipework, the refrigerant gas and the electrical work. Our ARCtick refrigerant trading authorisation is AU62259.
