If there is fire, smoke or someone has been hurt, call 000 first. For urgent electrical faults such as no power, a burning smell from a switchboard or sparking, a licensed electrician can make your home safe. Hoile Electrical takes calls 24 hours, 7 days, including after hours, on 0482 099 388.
Faults and no-power calls are the top line of work we do for home owners: over 300 jobs in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a fault, no power or tripping.
Call 000 first for fire or injury
Some situations need emergency services before an electrician:
- Fire, flames or heavy smoke.
- Someone has had an electric shock or is hurt.
- A person is in contact with a live wire or appliance.
Do not touch someone who may still be in contact with electricity. Switch off the power at the main switch only if it is safe to reach. Once everyone is safe, call us.

What counts as an electrical emergency
- Sparks, flames or smoke from a power point, switch or switchboard.
- A strong burning or hot plastic smell you cannot trace.
- Buzzing or crackling from the switchboard.
- Exposed or damaged wires, including after a storm or a drill through a wall.
- Water in or near electrical equipment.
- Total loss of power at your house only, when neighbours still have power.
If you are unsure, call us and describe what you see. We will tell you whether it can wait and what to do while you wait. For more, read what counts as an electrical emergency.
Many emergencies start small. A warm power point or a faint burning smell can turn serious if ignored, so it is better to call early than to wait and see.
What to do while you wait
- Switch off the affected circuit or the main switch if it is safe.
- Keep people and pets away from the area.
- Do not use water on an electrical fire. Call 000.
- Unplug appliances only if you can do so without touching damage or water.
- Do not touch wet switches or fittings, or open the switchboard.
If water has got into power points, lights or the switchboard after a storm or a leak, keep away from it and do not touch anything wet. Switch off at the main switch only if you can reach it without standing in water. If you cannot, stay out and call.
If a safety switch will not reset, the SA Government says a faulty appliance or faulty wiring could be the cause. Unplug the appliances on that circuit one at a time and try again. If it still will not reset, leave it off and call a licensed electrician.
Keep a torch handy in case the lights go out, and know where your main switch is. Both make a night call much easier to manage.
Power line down
If a power line is down, stay well clear. SA Power Networks says to keep at least 10 metres away from the line and anything it is touching, and to treat it as live. Do not touch or move it, and keep other people and pets back.
Call SA Power Networks on 13 13 66 (faults and emergencies). Call 000 if anyone is in danger, or if there is a fire. We can help with damage inside your home once the line is made safe. Our guide to what counts as an electrical emergency and the guide on what to do with no power to the house cover the rest.
After-hours call-outs
Faults do not keep business hours. We take calls 24 hours, 7 days, including nights, weekends and public holidays. When you call, we ask what happened and whether anyone is at risk, and we give you honest advice on what to do next. We do not make promises about arrival time that we cannot keep. If the whole house has lost power, our guide on no power to the house shows what to check first.
What we do when we arrive
We make the situation safe first. That might mean isolating a circuit, replacing a damaged part or shutting down a switchboard. We explain what we found, what we did, and whether further work is needed. Where a repair is not possible on the night, we leave your home as safe as we can and plan the fix with you.
Some faults need a second visit, for example when a part has to be ordered or a wall opened up. We tell you plainly what is safe to use in the meantime and what is not.
Safety and compliance
Emergency repairs must still be done by a licensed electrician. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469. Be wary of anyone who offers to fix a dangerous fault without showing a licence number.
Always keep the paperwork or written note of what was done, as it helps if you need to refer to the work later.
What to ask when you call
- Are you licensed, and what is your licence number?
- What should I do now to stay safe?
- Will you explain what you find before you start work?
- What will you leave in place if a full fix needs another visit?
