Rewiring replaces the old cables inside your walls and ceiling with new wiring and a modern switchboard. It is usually only needed in older homes where insulation has perished or the wiring cannot meet today's demand. A licensed electrician inspects first and tells you honestly whether you need a full or partial rewire.
Over 30 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a rewire.
Signs your home may need rewiring
- The house was built several decades ago and the wiring has never been updated.
- You see cloth-covered, rubber-covered or brittle cables.
- Fuses blow or breakers trip often.
- Power points or switches are warm, scorched or crackle.
- Lights flicker or there is a burning smell.
- You need many more power points than the house has.
Old wiring is not always unsafe, and not every old house needs a full rewire. The only way to know is to have it inspected.
What is behind the walls depends on when the house was wired. Very old wiring often has rubber or cloth insulation, which hardens, cracks and flakes with age. Later wiring is usually plastic-insulated and lasts better, but a house wired decades ago may still have too few circuits for today's appliances. An electrician can usually tell what you have from the switchboard and the cable in the roof space.
Pay attention to changes over time. A house that tripped rarely in the past and now trips weekly is telling you something. Our guide on why your power keeps tripping explains common causes.

Full rewire or partial?
A full rewire replaces nearly all the wiring in the house. A partial rewire replaces the worst circuits, such as the kitchen or an old extension, and leaves sound wiring alone. We will tell you which makes sense. We do not recommend a bigger job than your home needs. Many older homes also need the board looked at, so see our switchboard upgrades and safety switch installation pages.
What a rewire involves
- We inspect the existing wiring and switchboard and test the circuits.
- We talk through the plan, including where you want power points, lights and switches.
- Power is turned off and old cables are removed or made redundant.
- New cables are run through the roof space, walls and under the floor.
- A new switchboard with safety switches is fitted if needed.
- Everything is tested before power is restored.
Before work starts, move furniture away from walls and clear the roof space access where you can. Tell us about pets and anyone who needs power at home during the day.
How long and how disruptive?
A rewire takes longer than most electrical jobs. A small house can take several days. A larger or more complex home takes more. Parts of the home will be without power during the work, and some wall and ceiling openings may be needed. Plan for that, and ask whether the best time is before painting or renovating. We will give you a realistic schedule once we have seen the house.
Ask us about staging the job room by room if you plan to stay in the house throughout.
Plan the rewire with your renovation
If you are renovating, rewiring first saves repairing walls twice. Tell us your plans for kitchens, bathrooms, air conditioning or an EV charger, and we can allow for them in the new wiring and switchboard.
Safety and compliance
Rewiring must be done by a licensed electrician. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469. Some old materials may need special care, so if you suspect asbestos-containing material around the switchboard or wiring, do not disturb it. Ask us before any work starts.
What to ask your electrician
- Do I need a full rewire or only part?
- Can I see your licence number?
- How long will parts of the house be without power?
- How will walls and ceilings be left?
- What does your workmanship guarantee cover?

Common questions
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
Old cable types, frequent tripping, warm or scorched fittings and flickering are common signs. An inspection by a licensed electrician confirms it.
How long does a rewire take?
It depends on the size of the house and the access. We give a realistic schedule after we have seen it.
Can I stay in the house during a rewire?
Often yes, but power is off for parts of each day. We will plan this with you.
Will you make a mess of my walls?
Some openings may be needed. We keep them to a minimum and explain how they will be left.
Is a partial rewire an option?
Often yes. If only some circuits are in poor condition, we may replace just those.
