Data cabling gives you a fast, steady wired internet connection in the rooms where Wi-Fi struggles, such as a home office or a living room TV. Cabling that connects to the telecommunications network is covered by the ACMA cabling rules and must be done by a registered cabler. Our team holds ACMA cabling registration, so we can run your data cabling and the power in one visit. We also run cabling for CCTV cameras, intercoms and video doorbells.
Over 30 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved TV, antenna or data work.
Why a wired data point beats Wi-Fi in some rooms
Wi-Fi is handy, but walls, floors and distance weaken it. A cable does not have that problem. A data point gives you a steady connection that does not drop out in the middle of a video call or a game.
A wired point is worth considering for:
- A home office or study.
- A living room with a smart TV, streaming box or games console.
- A room at the far end of the house from the modem.
- A Wi-Fi access point, so the signal reaches every room.
Wi-Fi extenders and plug-in adaptors can help a little, but they share the same crowded signal. A cable from the modem to a fixed point is the more dependable fix, and it works with any internet plan.

What we can help with
- Advice on where data and TV points should go, and what the job needs.
- The power points beside your TV and desk.
- Neat routing for a wall-mounted TV, where the wall allows it.
- Data points, run by our ACMA-registered team.
- Cabling for CCTV cameras, intercoms and video doorbells.
- Ask us about TV points and reception problems.
Under the ACMA cabling rules, cabling that connects to the telecommunications network must be done by a registered cabler. That covers data and phone cabling. Our team holds ACMA cabling registration, and our licensed electricians look after the mains power side, so one visit covers both. Our guide to data points at home covers the options.
Older homes often have only one phone line and one TV point. Adding more is a common reason people call us.
If you are not sure what you need, tell us what is not working and where. We will suggest the simplest fix.
How the job works
- You tell us which rooms need a point and where the modem sits.
- We look at how the cable can run through your roof space, walls or floor.
- We agree the plan and the quote with you.
- The cable is run and the wall plates are fitted and connected.
- Each point is tested and the area is left clean.
Most homes need part of a day, and more points or a tricky roof space can take longer. We will give you an honest time estimate when we see the job.
Getting the best result
A few simple choices make a big difference:
- Cable to every room where you might want a desk or a TV later, not only the rooms you use today.
- Ask about Cat6 cable. It is the usual choice for new home data points.
- Think about a data point in the ceiling for a Wi-Fi access point. A cabled access point in the middle of the house usually gives steadier Wi-Fi than an extender that repeats a weak signal.
Label the cable ends and keep a note of which room each point serves. We can do this for you, which helps if you change your modem or add a router later.
TV reception problems
Poor TV reception can come from an old antenna, a damaged cable, a loose connection or too many splits in the line. Trees growing and bad weather can also affect the signal.
Antenna and TV cabling is low voltage, but mains power to a TV, an amplifier or a wall point stays with a licensed electrician. If you have lost channels or the picture breaks up, tell us what you see and ask what we can do.
CCTV cameras, intercoms and video doorbells
We run cabling for CCTV cameras, intercoms and video doorbells, and fit the power points they need. If you are planning cameras or a doorbell, tell us where they will go and where the recorder or screen will sit, and we will plan the cable runs with you.
It is easiest to run these cables while walls are open during a renovation, or while we are in the roof space for other work, so mention them early.
Power points beside your new data and TV points
When a new TV or home office goes in, you often need extra power points as well. We can fit them in the same visit, so you do not need two trades for the mains side. See our power point installation page.

Common questions
Do I need data cabling if I have good Wi-Fi?
Not always. A wired point still helps where you need the steadiest connection, such as a work-from-home desk or a TV that streams a lot.
Can you add a data point to an existing house?
Usually, yes. Our team holds ACMA cabling registration, so we can run the cable. Ask us about your roof space and walls and we will explain what is practical.
Can you help with a TV antenna?
Ask us. Antenna and TV cabling is low voltage, while mains power to a TV or amplifier is licensed electrician work. Tell us what is not working and we will say how we can help.
Can you hide the cables for a wall-mounted TV?
Often, depending on the wall. We will check when we see the wall and explain the options.
Do I need a registered cabler for data cabling?
Yes. Cabling that connects to the telecommunications network must be done by a registered cabler under the ACMA rules. Mains power work, such as an extra power point beside a data point, needs a licensed electrician. Our team holds ACMA cabling registration.
Will a data point make my internet faster?
It lets a device use the full speed your internet plan delivers, without walls and distance slowing the Wi-Fi. It cannot make the plan itself faster.
