Downlight installation means cutting small holes in your ceiling, fitting wiring and a driver or transformer, and mounting the lights so they sit flush. Most Adelaide homes now choose LED, which runs cooler and uses far less power than the old halogen type. A licensed electrician must do the wiring, and we can also swap an existing set of halogens for LEDs without redoing the whole ceiling.
Downlights are a regular job: over 200 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved downlights or LED lights.
Signs it is time for new downlights
Downlights are easy to ignore until they start to cause problems. These are the usual reasons homeowners call us:
- Halogen downlights that run hot, blow bulbs often or leave dark patches in the room.
- A room that feels dim, with one central light and shadowy corners.
- Flickering or buzzing after a bulb change, which can point to a worn transformer.
- Dark patches in the ceiling insulation around old fittings, or fittings that look scorched.
- A renovation, new kitchen or extension that needs a proper lighting plan.
- An electricity bill that has crept up and you want lighting that costs less to run.

What a downlight installation involves
A good job starts with a plan, not a hole saw. We walk through the rooms with you and agree where light is actually needed.
- We look at the ceiling, the roof space and the existing circuit.
- We mark out the positions so the lights are even and clear of beams, ducts and other fittings.
- Power is switched off and the holes are cut.
- Cables are run, connected and secured, and the fittings are mounted.
- We test every light, check any dimmer and tidy up before we leave.
Tell us early if you want to hide existing cables or fit lights over a kitchen bench or bathroom. The position changes what fittings are suitable.
Replacing halogens with LED downlights
An LED upgrade does not always mean a new ceiling. In many homes we can remove the old halogen fittings and fit LED ones in the same holes, which keeps mess and cost down.
Two things decide whether this works: the size of the existing holes, and the transformer or driver. Old halogen transformers often do not suit LEDs, so we usually replace them at the same visit. Fitting LEDs on the wrong transformer is a common cause of flicker and early failure.
If the old lights sit in a ceiling with insulation over them, we will look at how they were installed before we put new ones in. Our guide on how long LED downlights last explains what to expect from a good set.
Choosing the right lights
You do not need to know the technical details, but a few choices make a big difference to how a room feels.
- Colour: warm white (around 2700 to 3000K) suits bedrooms and living areas, cooler white suits kitchens, laundries and garages. Keep one colour across a room so the lights match.
- Brightness: a few well placed lights beat a ceiling full of holes. More is not always better.
- Dimming: if you want to dim the lights, the lights and the dimmer must be compatible. Tell us before you buy.
- Fixed or tilting: tilting lights can wash a wall or highlight artwork; fixed ones suit general lighting.
- Bathrooms and covered outdoor areas need fittings with the right IP rating, which shows how well a light keeps out water and dust.
Look for fittings rated to sit under ceiling insulation (often called IC rated), and ask about the driver as well as the light. Roof spaces in Adelaide get very hot in summer, and a driver that cannot cope is a common reason LEDs fail early. Fire-rated fittings are also worth asking about where the ceiling is part of a fire barrier between floors or units.
No roof space above the ceiling, such as under a flat roof or an upstairs floor? Downlights may not fit there. We can fit surface-mounted lights instead, which sit on the ceiling and need much less room above it.

How long does it take?
Replacing an existing set of downlights in a room is often done in a few hours. Installing new lights across a whole house, with extra wiring, takes longer, and we will give you an honest estimate once we have seen the ceiling and roof space.
Power is off to the lighting circuit while we work, so we plan the day around you.
Safety and what to ask your electrician
Downlights sit inside your ceiling, close to insulation and wiring, so the quality of the install matters. Work must be done by a licensed electrician. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469.
- Can I see your licence number?
- Which fittings are you using, and are they suitable for my ceiling and insulation?
- Will you replace the transformer or driver as well?
- Will the lights work with my dimmer?
- What happens to the old fittings, and what workmanship guarantee comes with the job?

Common questions
How many downlights do I need in a room?
It depends on the size of the room, ceiling height and what you use the room for. We will suggest a layout when we see the space, rather than filling the ceiling with lights.
Can I replace halogen downlights with LED ones?
Usually yes. Often the same holes can be used, but the old transformer commonly needs replacing too. We check this on the day.
Do LED downlights last longer than halogens?
Generally yes, and they run much cooler and use less power. How long they last depends on the quality of the fitting and the driver.
Will you make a mess of my ceiling?
We keep it tidy. Cutting holes does make some dust, so we protect floors and furniture and clean up when we finish.
Can downlights be dimmed?
Many can, but the lights and the dimmer have to be compatible. Let us know before you buy lights so the two work together.
Can insulation go over my new downlights?
Only if the fittings are rated for it. We choose fittings that suit your ceiling and insulation, and we keep the clearances the fitting maker requires.
