To power a shed, workshop or granny flat safely, we run a cable from your main switchboard to a small sub-board in the building. The sub-board feeds the lights and power points and has its own protection. We check your main board can handle the extra load first.

Over 40 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a shed, granny flat or sub-board.

Why an outbuilding needs more than an extension lead

An extension lead from the house is not a safe way to power a shed or granny flat for long. Leads get damaged, wet and overloaded. A proper installation gives you fixed power and lighting with the right protection.

A properly powered outbuilding can run:

  • Lights and power points.
  • A workshop with tools or a bench.
  • A home office or studio.
  • A granny flat, with its own lights, power points and appliances.

Moisture and dust are also a risk in sheds. Fixed wiring is installed with fittings suited to the space, which a lead and a double adaptor are not.

What is a sub-board?

A sub-board is a small switchboard in the outbuilding. A single cable runs from your main switchboard to it, and it splits the power into separate circuits for lights, power points and larger items.

It gives the outbuilding its own switches and safety switches, so a fault in the shed does not take out the house, and you can turn off the shed power from inside it.

If you plan to run a welder, compressor or other heavy tools, tell us. They draw more power than a light and a drill, and the cable and the board have to be sized for them.

How we run power to your shed or granny flat

  1. We look at the building, the route from the house and your main switchboard.
  2. We check the main board has room and capacity for the extra circuit.
  3. We agree the plan and quote, including how many lights and power points you want.
  4. We run the cable, usually underground in protective conduit across the yard, or overhead where that suits the site.
  5. We fit and wire the sub-board, lights and power points, then test everything.

Most sheds take a day or two, depending on the distance, the soil and how much you want installed. We will give you an honest time estimate when we see the job.

Cable routes and digging

The cable between buildings is the biggest part of the job. An underground route needs a trench at a safe depth and conduit to protect the cable. We will point out what we need and flag anything in the way, such as paths, trees and irrigation.

Before anyone digs, it is wise to know what is buried in the yard. Ask us and we will explain how to check. Our guide to running power to a shed covers the steps in more detail.

Thinking about a granny flat

A granny flat is a home, so it has a bigger electrical load than a shed. It may need its own supply arrangements, safety switches, smoke alarms and more. The size of the load decides what your main switchboard and supply must handle.

Talk to us early, before the build is finished. It is easier and cheaper to plan the electrical work in at the start than to change things later. If the granny flat needs separate metering or a supply upgrade, we arrange it with SA Power Networks for you. We can also tell you if your supply needs attention, see our consumer mains page.

What to ask your electrician

  • Have you checked my main switchboard can take the extra load?
  • Where will the cable run, and how deep?
  • How many lights and power points are included?
  • Will the sub-board have safety switches?
  • Can I see your licence number? (Ours is SA electrical licence PGE 229 469.)

Safety and compliance

Wiring a separate building must be done by a licensed electrician. If you plan a granny flat, ask your council and your electrician early about what is needed. We are happy to talk through the electrical side.

The SA Government says that by law, safety switches for power point and lighting circuits must be installed in new homes and buildings where electrical circuits are added or altered. Plan safety switch protection for the circuits in your shed or granny flat from the start, and test the switches twice a year, as the SA Government advises. Our guide to safety switches and RCDs explains how they work.

Common questions

Can I run power to my shed myself?

No. Fixed wiring must be done by a licensed electrician in South Australia.

Do I need a sub-board for a shed?

Often yes, especially if you want more than a light and one power point. We will advise when we see the job.

Can you run power to a shed across the yard?

Yes. We run cable in conduit, normally underground, and test it before we leave.

Will my switchboard handle a granny flat?

It depends on its age, space and the load. We check the board and the supply before we quote.

Can you add lights and power points in the same visit?

Yes. We can plan the whole outbuilding in one job.
