Replacing a light switch or fitting a dimmer is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician in South Australia. It is a short job in most homes. The main thing to get right is matching a dimmer to the type of light it controls, because the wrong dimmer causes flicker, buzzing and early failure.

Switch work is a regular job: over 100 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a light switch or dimmer.

Signs a light switch needs replacing

  • The switch feels loose, crunchy or does not click properly.
  • Lights flicker when you touch the switch or the wall plate.
  • The switch plate is warm, discoloured or has a scorch mark.
  • A crackling or buzzing sound when the light is on.
  • Cracked or broken plates, or a switch that sticks halfway.
  • The light works only if you hold the switch in a certain position.

A warm or burnt switch can mean a loose connection inside the wall. Turn the light off at the switchboard and call us. Do not keep using it. If the light simply will not come on, our guide on a light switch that is not working lists the usual causes.

Dimmers: getting the match right

Dimmers are the most common reason people call us about switches. The problem is almost always a mismatch between the dimmer and the lights.

  • Old halogen lights need a dimmer made for that load.
  • Many LED lights need a different type of dimmer, and some LED lights cannot be dimmed at all.
  • A mismatch can cause flicker, a buzzing noise, a poor dimming range or lights that will not switch fully off.
  • Mixing different lights on one dimmer often makes the problem worse.
  • Never put a light dimmer on a ceiling fan. A fan needs its own speed control, and a light dimmer can make the motor hum or overheat.

If you are planning new LED lights, tell us in advance so the lights and dimmer are chosen together. See our downlight installation page for how we plan a lighting upgrade.

Other switch types we install

  • Standard one-way switches and two-way switches, where two switches control one light, such as at the top and bottom of stairs.
  • Fan controls and combined fan and light controls.
  • Switches with an indicator light, useful for outside lights or garages.
  • Smart switches that work with an app or voice assistant, where your home network and wiring suit them.
  • Weatherproof switches for outdoor areas.

Smart switches need a neutral wire at the switch in some homes, and older homes often do not have one. We check this before you buy.

What the job involves

  1. We switch off the circuit at the switchboard and test that the switch is dead.
  2. The old switch is removed and the wiring is inspected.
  3. The new switch or dimmer is connected and fixed to the wall.
  4. We test the light, the dimming range and the switch action before we finish.

If we find damaged or old wiring behind the plate, we will show you and explain the options before going any further.

How long does it take?

One switch is usually a short job. Several switches in the one visit are quick too, because setting up and testing is shared across the job. We will give you a realistic estimate when you call.

Safety and what to ask your electrician

Replacing a light switch is not a job for home owners. Wiring inside the wall is live until the circuit is switched off and tested. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469.

  • Can I see your licence number?
  • Will the dimmer suit my type of light?
  • Will the circuit be tested and protected by a safety switch?
  • Can you replace the plates so they all match?
  • What workmanship guarantee comes with the work?

Common questions

Can I replace a light switch myself?

In South Australia, electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. We do not recommend doing it yourself.

Why does my dimmer buzz or flicker?

This is usually a mismatch between the dimmer and the lights, especially with LED globes. Replacing the dimmer or the lights with compatible ones normally fixes it.

Can I dim my LED downlights?

Many LED lights can be dimmed, but only with a compatible dimmer. Check before you buy the lights or let us advise you.

Why is my light switch hot?

A warm switch can point to a loose connection or too much load. Turn it off and call an electrician.

Can you fit smart switches?

In many homes, yes. We check your wiring and your network first, because some smart switches need a neutral wire.

Can I control one light from two switches?

Yes, with two-way wiring, such as at the top and bottom of stairs. If you replace one of the two switches it must be the right type, so tell us when a light has a switch at each end.
