Consumer mains are the cables that carry power from the network connection point to your switchboard. We repair and replace damaged consumer mains, including underground supply cable, and reconnect and test your supply. We do not work on private power poles; for a pole, use a contractor who works on private powerlines and check with SA Power Networks.

Consumer mains and underground cable work is a regular part of our job book, and over 20 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved three phase.

What are consumer mains?

Consumer mains are the cables that carry power from the network connection point to your switchboard. They can run overhead to the house, through the roof space, or underground. On some properties, especially larger blocks or battle-axe blocks, the supply also runs via a privately owned pole on the property.

The poles, powerlines and cables on the network side of the connection point belong to SA Power Networks. Equipment on your side of that point can belong to you. Your meter and the point where the supply connects to your property help show where the line is drawn.

Who is responsible for what?

SA Power Networks says that as a property owner you are responsible for managing privately owned electricity assets on your property, and that they should be inspected regularly by qualified people. It recommends inspection each year before the bushfire season, after major storms, or if you suspect damage. The page we checked is on the SA Power Networks website under privately owned poles and powerlines.

Where the connection point sits, and which parts you own, depends on your property. Our guide to who owns the power pole on your property explains how to work it out. If you are unsure, contact SA Power Networks, or ask us and we will help you read what is on your property. This page is general information, not legal advice.

We do not inspect, repair or replace power poles, private or network. If your property has a private pole, use a contractor who works on private poles and powerlines. We look after the consumer mains cable and your switchboard.

Signs your consumer mains need attention

  • Overhead supply cables that sag low, or clash in the wind.
  • Damaged or exposed underground cable, or a trench that has sunk.
  • Lights that flicker or dim across the house, or power that keeps dropping out.
  • A burning smell, buzzing or sparks from the supply point or the switchboard.

How we can help

We can inspect your consumer mains and the connection to your switchboard, find what is wrong and explain it in plain terms. Depending on what we find, we can help with:

  • Repairing or replacing damaged consumer mains, including underground supply cable.
  • Replacing or relocating a meter box that is rusty or damaged.
  • Checking the connection to your switchboard, and reconnecting and testing the supply.
  • Advising whether your home might suit a bigger supply, and what the switchboard would need.

Some of this work involves SA Power Networks, for example when the supply has to be disconnected or reconnected. We tell you what is needed and help you with the process. We do not work on power poles.

What the job involves

  1. We inspect the consumer mains cable and the connection to your switchboard.
  2. We explain what we can see, what looks like yours and what your options are.
  3. We agree the plan and quote with you for the electrical work.
  4. We arrange any disconnection that is needed, then carry out the agreed work.
  5. We test the supply and the switchboard before we hand back.

When damage is dangerous

If you see sparks, a fallen or low line, a pole leaning badly or smoke, stay well away and call 000. For faults and emergencies on the network, SA Power Networks runs a 24/7 phone line on 13 13 66. After you have made it safe, call us.

Never go near or touch fallen or low powerlines, and keep children and pets away.

Upgrading your supply for a new load

Adding an air conditioner, EV charger, granny flat or workshop can push an older supply past what it can safely carry. If your lights dim when big appliances start, or the supply cable is old, it is worth getting it checked. Read our guide on whether you need 3-phase power at home, and see our switchboard upgrades page for the board side of the job.
