Outdoor lighting makes a home safer and easier to use after dark. The most common jobs are sensor lights near doors and driveways, flood lights on walls and eaves, and low garden or path lighting. Outdoor wiring faces weather and moisture, so it must be done by a licensed electrician using fittings rated for outdoors.
Outdoor lights are a regular job: over 30 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved sensor or flood lighting.
Types of outdoor lighting
- Sensor lights: switch on when they detect movement, and switch off after a set time. Good for entries, side gates and driveways.
- Flood lights: a wide, bright wash of light over a yard, carport or side access.
- Wall lights: fitted beside doors and on patios for steady, softer light.
- Path and garden lights: small, low fittings that mark paths, steps and garden beds.
- Deck, pergola and alfresco lighting: built into the structure or fixed to the roof.
- Under-eave lights: neat lights tucked into the eaves for even cover.

Signs you need better outdoor lighting
- You use a torch to find the front door or the bins.
- Steps or paths are hard to see at night.
- A side gate or back yard is dark and you would feel better with a light there.
- An old sensor light switches on all night, or never comes on.
- You have added a deck, patio or alfresco and the light is too dim to use it.
Choosing and placing sensor lights
A sensor light is only as good as its position. We think through where people walk, where light needs to fall and what could set the sensor off by mistake.
- Fit sensors where they can see the area but not the street, so passing cars do not trigger them every time.
- Angle matters. A light aimed at a neighbour's window is a poor neighbour move.
- Leave a short run-on time so the light does not cut out while you are still carrying shopping.
- Keep a manual switch available for times when you want the light on or off.
What the installation involves
- We walk the property with you and agree where lights should go.
- We check where the power will come from. This can be an existing circuit, a new cable or a connection from inside the house.
- Cable is run safely, protected against weather and fixed in place.
- Lights are mounted, sealed and aimed.
- We test each light and the sensors, then adjust them with you after dark if needed.
If cable has to be buried or run a long way, we will explain what is needed and how it will be protected before we start.
Weather, moisture and safety
Outdoor fittings should be rated for the conditions. The IP rating on the box shows how well a fitting keeps out dust and water, and exposed spots such as walls, eaves and gardens need a higher rating than a sheltered porch. Water inside a light or a connection is dangerous and shortens the life of the fitting. Licensed electricians use the right fittings, seals and protection, and the circuit should be protected by a safety switch. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469.
Be cautious with cheap plug-in lights that you wire yourself. They suit some jobs, but mains wiring for outdoor lights is for a licensed electrician.
What to ask your electrician
- Can I see your licence number?
- Are the fittings rated for outdoor use?
- Where will the cable run, and how is it protected?
- Will the circuit have a safety switch?
- What workmanship guarantee comes with the job?

Common questions
Can you install sensor lights on an existing circuit?
Often yes. We check the circuit and wiring first and explain what is possible.
Why does my sensor light stay on or not turn on?
Wrong placement, a faulty sensor or a poor setting are the usual causes. We can adjust or replace the sensor.
Do outdoor lights need a safety switch?
Outdoor circuits should be protected by a safety switch. If your board does not have one, we can advise on adding one.
Can I install garden lights myself?
Plug-in lights are an option. Anything wired to the mains must be done by a licensed electrician.
Can you put lights on a pergola or deck?
Yes. We plan the cable route with you so the wiring is hidden and protected.
Why does my outdoor light trip the safety switch when it rains?
Water is probably getting into the fitting, the cable joint or a nearby outdoor power point. Leave it switched off and have it checked. Do not touch wet fittings.
