A licensed electrician can add a new power point wherever you need one, or swap an old one for a double, USB or outdoor model. The work involves running a cable from your existing wiring, fitting the outlet and testing it. Call us and we will tell you what is possible in your walls.

Power point work is a regular job: over 300 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved power points.

When you might need more power points

  • You rely on double adaptors and power boards.
  • You are setting up a home office, a workshop or a media wall.
  • Your kitchen bench has too few points for the appliances you use.
  • You want a point on the patio, in the garage or by the pool for tools and lights.
  • Existing points are cracked, loose, warm to touch or do not hold the plug firmly.

Power boards are fine for a lamp and a phone charger. They are not meant to run heaters, kettles or other heavy loads.

Overloaded power boards can overheat. The MFS advises using only power boards that have overload cut-out switches, and not plugging power boards into each other or several into a single power point. If you find yourself plugging boards into boards, extra points are the safer fix. If the power keeps cutting out when you add more appliances, read why your power keeps tripping.

Your options

  • A new double power point on an existing circuit.
  • A power point with built-in USB charging for phones and tablets.
  • A weatherproof outdoor point for the patio, garden or garage.
  • A dedicated circuit for a larger appliance, such as an oven or air conditioner.
  • Moving an existing power point to a more useful spot. This is usually possible, and the cable run and the wall construction decide how simple it is.
  • Replacing old points with new ones in the same spot.

We will explain which fits your need. A dedicated circuit is sometimes the right answer for a power-hungry appliance.

Tell us what you plan to plug in, such as a desk setup, a treadmill or a freezer in the garage, so the circuit suits the load.

What the installation involves

  1. We agree the position with you and check what is behind the wall and in the roof space or under the floor.
  2. Power to the circuit is switched off.
  3. The cable is run, the wall is opened as little as possible and the outlet is fitted.
  4. We test the point and the circuit's protection.
  5. Power is restored and the area is cleaned up.

Brick walls, finished ceilings and cavity walls change how a job is done. We will explain that before we start.

Is there spare capacity on my board?

Every new point adds a little load. In most homes that is no problem. If your board is old or full, we may suggest a switchboard upgrade or a safety switch first. We will tell you honestly if it is needed.

Older homes may have fewer circuits than a modern home needs. Adding points sensibly means checking this first, not just fitting another outlet.

Safety and compliance

Power point installation must be done by a licensed electrician. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469. Do not add or move a power point yourself, and do not trust unlicensed offers for cheap work. Wiring faults are not always obvious and can be dangerous later.

What to ask your electrician

  • Can I see your licence number?
  • Where will the cable run, and will walls need repair?
  • Is the point on a circuit with a safety switch?
  • Will you test it and clean up?
  • What does the workmanship guarantee cover?

A quote should say where the point goes, what type it is, and how the wall will be left.

When to call us

Call us for new points, USB upgrades or outdoor power. If a point sparks, feels hot, smells of burning or is discoloured, stop using it, switch off the circuit if safe, and call us. For fire or injury call 000. If a point or switch has simply stopped working, our guide on a light switch that is not working may help you narrow it down.

Common questions

Can I add a power point myself?

No. Wiring work must be done by a licensed electrician in South Australia.

How many power points can I put on one circuit?

It depends on the circuit and what will be plugged in. We check this before adding anything.

Can you add an outdoor power point?

Yes. We fit weatherproof outdoor points for patios, gardens and garages.

What is a USB power point?

It is a normal power point with USB charging ports built in, so you can charge a phone without an adaptor.

Why is my power point warm or discoloured?

It could be a loose connection or overloading. Stop using it and have it checked soon.

Do I get a certificate for a new power point?

Yes. In South Australia a licensed electrician certifies new electrical work with an electronic certificate of compliance, and your copy is sent to you. Keep it with your house papers.
