A rangehood removes steam, grease and cooking smells from your kitchen. Installing one involves mounting it at the right height, connecting its power, and running a duct to the outside if it is a ducted model. The electrical connection must be done by a licensed electrician, and the fan only works properly if the duct is correct.
Rangehood work is a regular job: about 40 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a rangehood.
Types of rangehood
- Under-cupboard: slides under a kitchen cabinet above the cooktop. Common in rentals and smaller kitchens.
- Wall-mounted canopy: a visible chimney style fitted to the wall.
- Integrated or slide-out: sits inside a cabinet and can be hidden when not in use.
- Island rangehood: hangs from the ceiling over a cooktop on an island bench.
- Ducted: vents air outside through a duct.
- Recirculating: filters the air and sends it back into the room. This type does not remove steam.

Ducted or recirculating?
A ducted rangehood moves steam, heat and grease out of the house. A recirculating one only filters the air, so the moisture and some of the smell stay. If you can run a duct to the outside, it is almost always the better choice.
The duct route is the part that surprises people. It might go up through the ceiling and roof, or through an external wall. Longer ducts with lots of bends reduce airflow and make the fan noisier. We look at the route before you buy a model, which can save you from picking one that does not suit your kitchen.
There is more than one way to route a duct. Going up through the roof and going out through an external wall each suit different kitchens, and the shorter and straighter run is usually the quieter and more effective one. Check the fan's air movement rating against the size of your kitchen as well: a fan that is too weak for the room will not clear steam, however well it is ducted.
Filters need looking after either way. Recirculating models rely on charcoal filters that need replacing as often as the maker says. Metal grease filters need regular cleaning, or the fan works harder and clears less.
What the installation involves
- We check the wall or cabinet, the cooktop below and where the duct will go.
- The rangehood is mounted at the height the manufacturer recommends over your cooktop.
- The duct is run and sealed. The ends are fitted with a weatherproof cap.
- Power is connected, either at a nearby power point or by hardwiring.
- We test the fan speeds, the light and the airflow, then show you how to clean the filters.
A rangehood needs a power supply close by. If there is no suitable power point, we can add one in the right place with a power point installation.
Signs your rangehood needs replacing
- It is noisy or shakes when the fan runs.
- Greasy residue drips from it, or the filters stay greasy even after cleaning.
- It barely moves air, or the light has stopped working.
- You are renovating the kitchen and want a different style.
- Smells and steam still hang around even with the fan on.
Thinking about cost? Our guide on rangehood installation cost explains what changes the size of the job.
How long does it take?
A like-for-like swap on an existing duct and power supply is usually a short job. A new ducted install, with a hole through a roof or wall, takes longer. We will give you an honest time estimate once we have seen your kitchen.
Safety and what to ask your electrician
The rangehood sits above a cooktop, so height and clearances matter for safety. Follow the maker's stated height, and if the cooktop maker states a different minimum, the greater distance should apply. Wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469.
- Can I see your licence number?
- Is the rangehood going to be ducted outside?
- What height will it be fitted at above the cooktop?
- Is a power point needed, and where will it go?
- Will you take away the old rangehood, and what workmanship guarantee applies?

Common questions
Do I need an electrician to install a rangehood?
The electrical connection must be done by a licensed electrician in South Australia. A handyman or builder can often do the mounting.
Does a rangehood need to be ducted outside?
It does not have to be, but a ducted rangehood removes steam and grease far better than a recirculating one.
How high should a rangehood be above the cooktop?
The manufacturer sets the recommended height for your model. We follow it when we fit the rangehood.
Can you install a rangehood I have bought already?
Yes. Please have the model details handy so we can check the duct and power needs.
Can you replace my old rangehood with a different style?
Usually yes, but the duct, the power and the cabinet may need changes. We check these first.
Do you cut cabinets or make holes in the roof for a duct?
Cabinet changes are for a joiner or builder. Please ask us when you book what we can do for the duct route, and we will tell you plainly what is and is not included.
