No Hot Water? When It's an Electrical Problem

If you have an electric hot water system and no hot water, the cause is often electrical: a tripped safety switch or breaker, a failed heating element, a faulty thermostat or a timer set wrong. Check the switchboard first. If the system leaks, makes banging noises or is gas powered, call a plumber.
Electrical work on hot water systems is a smaller line for us: over 30 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026.
Start with the switchboard
Walk to your switchboard and look for a tripped switch. Electric hot water systems usually run on their own circuit, and it may be labelled 'hot water', 'HWS' or 'off-peak'. A tripped switch is one of the most common reasons for no hot water.
- Look for a breaker or safety switch that has flicked down or to 'off'.
- If one has tripped, switch it back on once.
- If it trips again straight away, leave it off. There is a fault that needs an electrician, and our electrical fault finding service is built for that.
- If other things in the house also lost power, our guide on no power to the house can help.
Other electrical causes
If the switchboard looks fine and the water is still cold, the cause may be inside the system or its wiring. These are electrician jobs:
- A failed heating element. The element is what heats the water in a storage tank. They wear out and burn out.
- A faulty thermostat or overheat cut-out that has tripped.
- A damaged or loose cable between the switchboard and the heater.
- A timer or controller on the hot water circuit that is set wrongly or has failed.
- A circuit that is not receiving power because of a wiring fault at the board.
Never open the heater's cover or touch its wiring yourself. These parts carry mains voltage.
What is probably not electrical
Some hot water problems are plumbing, not electrical. Call a plumber if:
- Water is leaking from the tank, the pipes or the pressure relief valve.
- The system bangs or knocks loudly.
- You have a gas hot water system. The gas side is a plumber's or gasfitter's job.
- Hot water runs out quickly but is hot when it comes, which can point to a tank or valve problem.
- Water from the hot tap is rusty or smells.
A simple way to think about it
If the tank itself is dry and there is no leak, but it never heats up, power is the likely cause. If water is escaping, it is plumbing. If you are unsure, we are happy to check the electrical side first and tell you straight if it needs a plumber. We are electricians, not plumbers, so we do not replace tanks or work on pipes.
Is it an emergency?
Cold showers are an annoyance, not an emergency. If you are unsure, read what counts as an electrical emergency. Water leaking onto electrical parts, a burning smell, scorch marks, or a switch that will not stay on are different. Switch the hot water circuit off at the switchboard if you can do so safely, stay away from the heater, and call us (see our emergency electrician service). If you see smoke or fire, leave the house and call 000.
What we do when we visit
- Check the circuit, switch or breaker and any timer or controller.
- Test whether power is reaching the heater.
- Test the element and thermostat where it is safe to do so.
- Explain what we found and your options, in plain language.
- Repair the electrical fault, or tell you if a plumber needs to do the next step.

Common questions
Why is there no hot water when the power is on?
The hot water circuit may have tripped, or the element, thermostat or wiring may have failed. Check the switchboard first, then call an electrician if it is not a simple trip.
Should I call an electrician or a plumber for no hot water?
If an electric system has no power or the switch keeps tripping, an electrician. If there is a leak or the system is gas, a plumber.
Can I replace a heating element myself?
No. It involves mains power and water together. Leave it to a licensed professional.
Why does my hot water breaker keep tripping?
It usually means an electrical fault, such as a failed element or damaged wiring. Do not keep resetting it. Leave it off and call an electrician.
Do you replace hot water tanks?
No. We are electricians and handle the electrical side. For tank replacement or leaks you need a plumber.
