How Much Does Rangehood Installation Cost?

The cost of installing a rangehood depends on the type, the ducting, the wiring and how easy the access is, so one number rarely fits every home. A simple replacement in the same spot costs less than a new ducted unit that needs a hole through the roof or wall. A short on-site look lets an electrician quote the actual job.
Rangehoods are part of our regular kitchen work: about 40 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a rangehood.
Why there is no one price
Online figures vary a lot because rangehood jobs vary a lot. Two kitchens can need quite different work, even for the same model.
We do not publish prices on this page. Instead, we explain what moves the cost, so you can compare quotes fairly. Our rangehood installation page explains the job itself.
What affects the cost
- The type: slide-out, canopy, under-cupboard, wall chimney or built-in.
- Ducted to the outside or recirculating with a filter.
- The length and route of the duct, and whether it goes through a wall or roof.
- Whether there is already a power point in the right spot.
- Replacing an existing rangehood or installing a new one.
- Ceiling height and access to the roof space.
- Any extra wiring or switchboard work.
- Making good the walls or cabinetry after the work.
Ducted or recirculating
A ducted rangehood sends steam, smoke and grease outside. It does the best job but needs a duct run. A recirculating unit passes air through a filter and back into the kitchen. It is easier to fit but does not remove moisture.
If you cook a lot, ducting is usually worth considering. Ask your electrician what is practical in your home.
Electrical work involved
Many rangehoods plug in to a power point above the unit. Some are wired in. Either way the circuit must suit the load and be protected by a safety switch (RCD vs safety switch).
- Check the power point is in a safe, accessible spot.
- Fixed wiring must be done by a licensed electrician.
- Duct work and cutting through walls or roofs may involve another trade.
What a good quote includes
- The make, model and size of the unit, or whether you supply it.
- Ducting type and where it exits.
- Electrical work and any new power point.
- Removal of the old unit.
- Who patches and paints, if anyone.
- Certification of the electrical work (see our guide to the certificate of compliance in SA).
- A clear start and finish.
Can you save money?
- Choose a unit that suits the existing duct and power point.
- Replace like for like where possible.
- Have the old rangehood removed in the same visit.
- Combine with other kitchen electrical work, like an oven or cooktop.
- Supply the unit yourself if your electrician agrees, but ask about warranty first.

Common questions
Is it cheaper to replace a rangehood than install a new one?
Usually, because the power and duct are already there. A new position often needs extra wiring and ducting.
Do I need an electrician to install a rangehood?
If it needs wiring or a new power point, yes. A licensed electrician should do the fixed wiring.
Does a rangehood have to be ducted outside?
Not always. Recirculating units are common, but ducted units remove steam and smoke better.
Can I buy my own rangehood?
Often yes, but check with your electrician first so it suits the space and duct, and ask about warranty.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the job. A like-for-like swap is quicker than a new ducted install. We will tell you when we quote.
