Why Is My Smoke Alarm Beeping?

A smoke alarm that beeps or chirps every minute or so usually has a low battery, is reaching the end of its life, or has a fault. A continuous loud alarm means it has detected smoke or dust, or an interconnected alarm elsewhere has gone off. Work out which sound you have, then follow the steps below.

Over 100 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a smoke alarm.

If the alarm is going off continuously

If the alarm is loud and steady, treat it as real until you know otherwise.

  1. Check for smoke, fire or a burning smell. If there is any, get everyone out and call 000.
  2. If it is a false alarm, such as burnt toast or steam, open windows and doors and let the air clear.
  3. Press the test or hush button if the alarm has one.
  4. If the alarm will not stop, call us.

Do not take the alarm down and leave it down. A silent alarm protects no one.

If it chirps once every minute or so

A short chirp at regular gaps is the alarm asking for attention. The most common reasons are:

  • A low battery. This is the usual cause in battery-powered alarms and in mains alarms with a backup battery.
  • The alarm is at the end of its life. Many alarms are designed to last around ten years and then start chirping to say they need replacing.
  • Dust or insects inside the sensing chamber.
  • A fault in the alarm.

The chirp often starts in the early hours of the morning, when the temperature drops.

Step-by-step: how to stop the chirping

Safety first. If your alarm is mains-connected, never disconnect or touch any wiring. Wiring is licensed electrical work.

  1. Find which alarm is chirping. In a house with several, the sound can seem to come from everywhere.
  2. If the alarm is mains-connected, switch off the smoke-alarm circuit at the switchboard first. Take care on a ladder, and ask someone to steady it.
  3. Twist the alarm off its plug-in base. Do not pull or disconnect any wires, and do not open the base.
  4. Replace the battery with the type the label specifies. If the battery is sealed, do not try to open the alarm. Call us.
  5. Check the date on the back of the alarm. If it is about ten years old or older, the whole alarm needs replacing, not just the battery.
  6. Gently vacuum or blow dust from the vents, twist the alarm back onto its base, switch the power back on and press the test button.

If the alarm is stuck, hard to reach, or still chirps after a new battery and a clean, call us rather than forcing it. A licensed electrician can replace it safely.

Why every alarm is going off at once

Many Adelaide homes have interconnected smoke alarms. These are linked so that if one detects smoke, they all sound. If the whole house is beeping and there is no smoke, one alarm has probably triggered or failed, and it passed the signal to the others. The alarm that triggered often has a flashing light. Find it, then follow the steps above.

When it is time for a new alarm

  • It is around ten years old or past the date printed on the back.
  • It chirps even with a new battery.
  • It has changed colour, been painted over or damaged.
  • It does not sound when you press the test button.
  • Alarms in the house are different ages and types, and you want them matched and interconnected.

Mains-connected alarms must be installed and replaced by a licensed electrician. We can swap them out and test the whole system. Our smoke alarm installation page explains what is involved.

Smoke alarms and your obligations

Smoke alarm rules in South Australia depend on the type of home and when it was built or bought. We summarise what the SA Government and the Metropolitan Fire Service say in our guide to smoke alarm rules for SA homes. If you are not sure whether your alarms are up to standard, ask us and we will check.

When to call us

Call Hoile Electrical on 0482 099 388 if you cannot find the chirping alarm, a mains alarm keeps beeping after a new battery, several alarms are false-alarming, or you want your alarms replaced or interconnected. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our SA electrical licence number is PGE 229 469. If the alarm is sounding and you think there is a real danger, see our guide to what counts as an electrical emergency.

Common questions

Why is my smoke alarm beeping with a new battery?

The alarm may be at the end of its life, dirty or faulty. Check the date on the back and clean the vents. If it still beeps, replace the alarm.

Why is my smoke alarm beeping every 30 or 60 seconds?

A regular chirp is usually a low battery or end-of-life warning.

Why is my hardwired smoke alarm beeping?

Mains alarms with a backup battery can beep when the battery is low or when the alarm is old or faulty. A power fault can also cause it. Call an electrician if the cause is not clear.

Why are all my smoke alarms beeping at once?

They are probably interconnected and one has triggered or failed. Look for the alarm with a flashing light.

Can I just remove the smoke alarm to stop the noise?

Do not leave it removed. A missing alarm is a safety risk. For a mains-connected alarm, switch off its circuit and twist it off its base only, never touching the wiring, then replace the battery or call us.

How long do smoke alarms last?

Many are designed to last around ten years. Check the date or label on your alarm.
