In South Australia, electrical installation work in a home must be carried out by a suitably licensed electrician, according to the Office of the Technical Regulator. Connecting a ceiling fan to the wiring is electrical installation work, so it is a job for a licensed electrician rather than a home owner. You can still help with the preparation.

Over 100 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a ceiling fan.

What the rule says

The Office of the Technical Regulator (OTR) in South Australia says that under the Electricity Act 1996, home owners and tenants must make sure their electrical installations are safe and compliant, and that any electrical installation work in the home must be carried out by a suitably licensed electrician (Regulation Roundup, issue 56, September 2025, energymining.sa.gov.au, read 30 October 2026).

We read that for the general rule. We did not find an OTR page that lists every exemption, so for an unusual situation, ask the OTR or a licensed electrician before you start.

Why it is not a DIY job

  • The fan connects to the mains wiring. A mistake can cause shock or fire.
  • The fan is heavy and moves. If it is not mounted securely, it can wobble or fall.
  • The ceiling box and support must be rated for the weight.
  • Wiring and switches must be correct for the fan, including any light.
  • Mistakes in unlicensed electrical work can mean trouble well after the job, so it is better done right the first time.

What you can do yourself

  • Choose the fan, with help from us if you like. Check the size suits the room.
  • Clear the room and the space under the ceiling.
  • Take photos of the existing light and the switch, which helps us plan the job.
  • Tell us whether you want a light, a remote or a wall control.
  • Make sure we have access to the roof space if there is one.

Doing this groundwork means the visit is quicker and the quote is more accurate. It also gives you time to think about where the fan will sit, which way the blades will clear furniture and doors, and whether you want a separate switch for the light and the fan.

What a licensed electrician does

  1. Switches off the power and checks it is off.
  2. Removes the old fitting and checks the ceiling can carry a fan.
  3. Fits a secure mount and connects the fan to the wiring.
  4. Fits or checks the switch or controller.
  5. Tests the fan and the circuit and leaves it working.

Most of the work is in the mounting and the checking, not the wiring itself. A fan that is fitted properly is quiet, does not wobble and stays put for years.

Common questions

Can I just swap an old fan for a new one?

Swapping still means disconnecting and reconnecting mains wiring, which is electrical work for a licensed electrician in South Australia.

Can I hang a fan if the wiring is already there?

Connecting it to the wiring is still the electrical part. The mounting must also be secure.

What happens if I do it myself?

You risk shock, fire, a fan that is not mounted safely and a breach of the rules.

Is the rule the same in every state?

Not exactly. This guide covers South Australia only.

Does Hoile Electrical fit fans I have bought myself?

Yes, we can fit a fan you supply. Show us the model so we can check it suits the room.
