The cost of installing a ceiling fan depends mainly on whether there is already a wired light point to use, how high and what type the ceiling is, how many fans you want and whether the fan has a light or needs a new switch. We do not publish a price because each room is different, but we can explain what is involved so you can compare quotes properly.
Over 100 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved a ceiling fan.
Why one fan costs more than another
Fitting a fan to an existing ceiling light point is a simpler job than running a new cable to a spot where there was nothing before. The fan itself is also a big variable: its weight, size and features all affect the work.
If the fan needs a new wall control or dimmer, see our light switch and dimmer installation page.
What affects the price
- Existing wiring. Replacing a light with a fan is simpler than adding a new point.
- Ceiling height and type. High ceilings need longer rods and more care. Some ceilings need extra support to hold the weight.
- Roof access. Easy roof space access speeds up running cable. Tight or no access takes longer.
- The fan. Heavier fans, fans with lights and fans with remote controls need more work.
- The switch. A fan needs a suitable switch or controller, and an old light switch may need replacing.
- Number of fans. Fitting several in one visit is usually more efficient than one at a time.
- The board. Rarely, an old board without a safety switch needs attention before new circuits are added.
What a quote should include
- Supply and fitting, or fitting only if you have bought the fan.
- Any new cable, switch or controller.
- Support or bracing in the ceiling if needed.
- Testing and removal of the old light fitting.
- A Certificate of Compliance if the job needs one.
If you have already bought the fan, show the electrician the model so they can check it suits the room.
Fan fitting tips
- Check the ceiling height. Blades should be at a safe height above the floor.
- Pick a fan sized for the room. Too small will not move enough air.
- Tell us if you want a light, a remote or a wall control.
- Ask us about ceiling insulation or roof space before the day, so access is clear.
Do it properly
Fan installation is electrical work, and in South Australia it must be done by a licensed electrician. Our guide on installing a ceiling fan yourself explains the rule. Our ceiling fan installation page explains how we do the job.
Questions to ask any electrician
- Is the fan fitted to a proper support, not just the old light fitting?
- Does the price include the switch or remote?
- Will you test the fan and circuit before you leave?
- Can I see your licence number?
You can also check an electrician's licence on the official register before you book.

Common questions
Is it cheaper to replace an existing light with a fan?
Often yes, because the wiring is already there. We will check the ceiling and cable when we look.
Do I have to buy the fan from you?
No. You can supply your own and we will fit it, or we can advise on a suitable one.
Can any ceiling hold a fan?
Not always. Some need extra support so the fan is secure and does not wobble.
Does the quote include a switch or remote?
It should. Ask for the controller to be listed on the quote.
How long does it take?
A simple replacement is usually quick, while new wiring takes longer. We will give you an honest estimate on the day we assess it.
