Do You Need 3-Phase Power at Home?

Most homes run happily on single-phase power. You may need 3-phase if you plan to run large equipment such as a big workshop machine, multiple heavy loads at once, or if your supply is already at its limit. A licensed electrician can check what you have and tell you honestly whether an upgrade is worth it.

3-phase work is a small part of our work: over 20 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved 3-phase.

Single-phase and 3-phase, in plain English

Electricity reaches your house through the supply cable. A single-phase supply has one live wire. A 3-phase supply has three, which share the load between them and can deliver more power overall.

Think of it as a one-lane road versus a three-lane road. Both get you there. The wider road copes better with heavy traffic.

How to tell what you have

  • Look at the main switch on your switchboard. A single-phase home has one main switch. A 3-phase home often has a three-pole main switch or three linked switches.
  • Look at your electricity bill or meter. It may list the supply type.
  • Look at the cable coming into the house. Three or four heavy cables can mean 3-phase.
  • Ask us. A quick look at the switchboard and meter is usually enough to tell.

Do not open the meter box or the switchboard cover to check. Leave that to an electrician.

Who might need 3-phase

Most families in an average-sized Adelaide house do not need it. It starts to make sense when you have:

  • A home workshop with large machines, such as a big compressor or welder.
  • Multiple large loads at once, such as ducted air-con, an electric oven, an EV charger and a pool pump.
  • A large house or granny flat that has outgrown its supply.
  • Plans for a significant renovation or extension.
  • Equipment that only runs on 3-phase and cannot be swapped.

Do you need it for an EV charger or air-con?

Usually not. A standard home EV charger and a split system air conditioner can run on single-phase power, provided your board and supply can take the extra load. The first step is a check of your switchboard, not an assumption that you need 3-phase. Our guide to EV charger installation costs covers the basics, and our EV charger installation page explains the job.

What an upgrade involves

Going from single-phase to 3-phase is not just a switch inside the house. It generally involves your electricity network (our page on consumer mains covers the supply side), a new or changed supply connection, changes at your meter box and switchboard, and approval steps. The details depend on your street and supply.

Because it is more involved than most home electrical jobs, we start with a check and an honest conversation. If you do not need it, we will say so.

Safety and compliance

All of this work must be done by a licensed electrician. Hoile Electrical holds SA electrical licence PGE 229 469. Never attempt to change the supply or work on the meter yourself. If you are unsure who owns the pole or cable at your property, read who owns the power pole on your property.

What to ask your electrician

  • Do I actually need 3-phase, or will single-phase do the job?
  • Can my existing board cope, or does it need an upgrade?
  • What will the network need to do, and what approvals are involved?
  • Is the quote fixed, and what could change it?
  • How long will the power be off?

Common questions

Is 3-phase better than single-phase for a home?

Not automatically. It can carry more load, but most homes never need it. It makes sense for heavy equipment or very high demand.

How do I know if my house has 3-phase power?

Your main switch, meter and incoming cable usually give it away. An electrician can confirm in a short visit.

Do I need 3-phase for an EV charger?

Usually not. Many home chargers run on single-phase. Your switchboard and supply capacity are the thing to check.

Can I upgrade to 3-phase myself?

No. It must be done by a licensed electrician and involves your electricity network.

Does a 3-phase upgrade lower my power bill?

No. It increases the capacity of your supply, not its efficiency. It will not cut your bill by itself.
