How Much Does an EV Charger Installation Cost?

The cost of a home EV charger installation depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable has to run from your switchboard, whether your board has capacity, and whether you have single or three-phase power. We do not quote without a look at the site because the switchboard and cable run change the job the most.
EV charger work is a small but steady part of our work: over 20 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026 involved an EV charger.
The charger and the install are separate costs
The total has two parts: the charger itself and the electrical work to connect it. Some people buy a charger first, and some ask the electrician to supply one. Either way, ask for both to be listed so you can compare quotes properly.
What affects the price
- The switchboard. If the board is full, old or has no safety switch, it may need upgrading before a charger can be added. This is the most common surprise.
- The cable run. A charger close to the board is simpler than one at the far end of a garage or in a separate building.
- Wall, floor and ground type. Brick, concrete or trenching take longer than a simple internal run.
- Single or three-phase supply (see do you need 3-phase power at home). Most homes have single phase, which is fine for many chargers, but three-phase may suit faster charging.
- Charger features. Smart features, load control and a dedicated circuit all matter.
- Your power supply. Your total house load matters, particularly if you also have air conditioning, an electric oven or a pool pump.
What a quote should include
- The charger model and its power rating, or confirmation you are supplying it.
- A dedicated circuit with its own protection and safety switch.
- The cable route, any trenching or conduit and making good.
- Any work on the switchboard.
- Testing and a Certificate of Compliance.
- Any approval from the network operator if one is needed.
Before you buy a charger
- Check your car's maximum home charging rate. A faster charger will not charge the car any faster than that.
- Tell us where you park and where the charger will go.
- Tell us what else runs on the same supply, such as air conditioning or a pool pump, since it affects how the circuit is set up.
- Let us look at the switchboard before you buy.
Costs that catch people out
A board without room or a safety switch, a long cable run through a finished house, and a charger that needs more supply than the house can provide are the three. An inspection first avoids them.
Our EV charger installation page explains the job. If your board needs work, see our guide on switchboard upgrade costs and our guide on whether you need 3-phase power at home.
How long it takes and what to expect
A simple install with the charger near the board can be done in part of a day. A longer cable run, or work on the switchboard, takes longer. Power will be off to part of the house while we work on the board, and we will explain this beforehand.
Tell us if you work from home or rely on medical equipment so we can plan the job around you.

Common questions
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. It depends on whether your board has space and capacity. We check this on the first visit.
Can I use a normal power point to charge?
A dedicated charger on its own circuit is the safer choice for regular charging.
Do I need three-phase power?
Not for most home charging. It depends on the charger and car. We can advise.
Do I have to buy the charger from you?
No. You can supply your own and we will check it suits your house.
Is a Certificate of Compliance provided?
A licensed electrician gives you one for this kind of work. Keep it with your house records.
