Good LED downlights usually last many years and often far longer than old halogens, but the real life depends on heat, the quality of the fitting and the power supply. Many downlights fail early because of a failing driver or trapped heat, not the LED itself. If lights flicker, dim or fail one by one, they may need replacing.

Downlights and LED lighting are a regular job for us: over 200 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026.

How long LED downlights are made to last

Makers often rate LED downlights by hours of use, and the figures sound very long. In a real home the number that matters is how the light copes with heat, switching and the power it gets.

Rather than a fixed life, think of it as years of everyday use. A well-made fitting that stays cool and has a good driver can run for a long time. A cheap one in a hot ceiling can fade or fail much sooner.

What shortens their life

  • Heat. Downlights sit in a hot ceiling space, and insulation packed around them traps heat.
  • A weak driver. The small power supply is often the first part to fail.
  • Low-quality fittings with cheap parts.
  • Power surges and unstable voltage.
  • Frequent switching on and off.
  • Using the wrong dimmer for the light.

Signs your downlights are wearing out

  • Flickering or buzzing when on, or when dimmed.
  • Light that looks dimmer or has changed colour over time.
  • Lights that take a moment to come on or go off by themselves.
  • One light fails, then others in the same room follow.
  • A fitting that feels very hot to touch.
  • Discolouration or marks on the ceiling around the light.

If several lights in a room go at once, the problem is often the driver or the circuit, not the LED itself. A dead switch can look similar, so also read light switch not working.

Is it the globe, the driver or the fitting?

Some downlights have a replaceable globe. Many have a built-in LED that cannot be changed, and the whole fitting is replaced. Ask your electrician which type you have. Our downlight installation page explains the options.

An electrician can test the driver and the wiring. If the driver or the fitting has failed, replacing it is usually safer than fixing it. Never remove a downlight yourself, as it is wired to the mains.

What to look for when you replace them

  • Fittings that are rated for contact with insulation, or the correct clearance in the ceiling.
  • A fire-rated or IC-rated fitting where the ceiling needs it.
  • A colour temperature you like: warm, neutral or cool.
  • The right dimmer, if you want to dim them.
  • Fittings with a decent warranty from a supplier your electrician trusts.

Can I replace a downlight myself?

Changing a plug-in globe on a fitting that is switched off is one thing. Replacing a downlight fitting means working on fixed wiring, and that work should be done by a licensed electrician.

Doing it wrong can overheat the ceiling space. See our lighting page for the lighting work we do. A licensed electrician will also certify the work when it is done.

Getting more life from your lights

  • Ask your electrician to check clearances and fitting covers.
  • Use quality fittings from the start.
  • Match the dimmer to the lights, using light switch and dimmer installation if yours needs changing.
  • Have flickering looked at early, because it can be a sign of a wiring fault.

Common questions

How many years should an LED downlight last?

It depends on the fitting, heat and power supply. A good one can last many years, and often outlasts older halogens, but we cannot give one number for every home.

Why do my LED downlights keep failing?

Common causes are heat, a weak driver, poor-quality fittings or voltage problems. If they fail often, have an electrician check the wiring and driver.

Why are my downlights flickering?

Usually a failing driver, an incompatible dimmer or a loose connection. Flickering can also point to a wiring fault, so get it checked.

Can I replace LED downlights myself?

Only a licensed electrician can replace the fitting itself. You may be able to change a plug-in globe if the power is off, but check with your electrician.

Do LED downlights use less power than halogens?

Yes, LEDs generally use much less power than halogen downlights, and they give off less heat.
