A 3-in-1 bathroom heater combines a heater, a light and an exhaust fan in one ceiling unit, usually run from a single wall switch. They save ceiling space and tidy up the look, but they need the right ducting to the outside and a suitable circuit. Check the size of your bathroom, the duct route and the switching before you buy.

Bathroom heaters and 3-in-1 units are a smaller line for us: about 20 jobs for home owners in the 12 months to October 2026.

What a 3-in-1 unit is

It is a single unit set into the ceiling. It gives you heat, light and ventilation, often with separate switches for each function. They replace the old trio of a heat lamp, a light and a separate fan.

Because the fan is part of the unit, it should be ducted to the outside, not into the roof space. Moist air in the roof causes mould and damages insulation.

Heat lamps, fan heaters and what is inside

Different units heat in different ways. Some use heat lamps, which glow and warm you directly. Others use a heating element with a fan. Ask the shop or your electrician how the model you like produces its heat and how loud it is.

  • Heat lamps feel warm quickly but light the room, which some people find harsh.
  • Fan-forced heaters warm the air but can be louder.
  • Check the noise rating of the exhaust fan.

What to check before you buy

  • Size of the bathroom and the ceiling height.
  • Space in the ceiling for the unit, and a clear path for the duct.
  • Where the duct will leave the house: through the roof or an outside wall.
  • Whether the unit is suited to the area above a shower or bath.
  • How the controls work: one switch or several.
  • Whether you can get replacement lamps and parts later.
  • The electrical load, as heating uses more power than a light.

Is your wiring ready?

Heating draws more power than a normal bathroom light or fan. Older wiring may not cope, and an old circuit may need changes. A safety switch is important in a wet room (see RCDs and safety switches).

An electrician will check the circuit, the cabling and the switchboard before fitting, so you know about any extra work first.

What installation involves

  1. Mark the ceiling position and check the roof space.
  2. Cut the opening and run the duct to the outside.
  3. Run the cable and fit a new switch or switches.
  4. Connect and test the unit and the safety switch.
  5. Seal around the duct and tidy up.
  6. Certify the work with a certificate of compliance.

Replacing an old unit is often quicker than a new position, but the duct and wiring still need checking.

Common mistakes

  • Venting into the roof space.
  • Buying a unit that is too small or too loud.
  • Skipping the safety switch, which safety switch installation can fix.
  • Choosing by price and ignoring parts availability.
  • Doing the wiring yourself. Fixed wiring should be left to a licensed electrician.

Common questions

What does a 3-in-1 bathroom heater do?

It combines a heater, a light and an exhaust fan in one ceiling unit.

Does a 3-in-1 unit need to be vented outside?

Yes, the exhaust should be ducted to the outside, not into the roof space, to avoid moisture damage.

Can I replace my old heat lamp with a 3-in-1?

Often yes, but the opening size, duct and wiring need checking first.

Do they use a lot of power?

The heater part uses more power than a light or fan, so use it only while needed. Check the unit's rating before you buy.

Do I need an electrician to install it?

Yes. It is fixed wiring, so it should be installed by a licensed electrician, who should certify the work.
